Affliction

Therefore [the Egyptians] set taskmasters over [the children of Israel] to afflict them with their burdens... But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. (Exodus 1:11-12 NKJV)

Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word ... And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. (Acts 11:19-21 NKJV)

It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes...
I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are right,
And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me...
Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction.
(Psalm 119:71,75,92 NKJV)

Couch potatoes feeding on chips do not become strong, and if they grow it is to their detriment. Healthy growth and strength are the result of disciplined exercise and nutrition.

Affliction is the Lord's discipline and exercise to make us strong. Discipline is not bad. It can be synonymous with either "punishment" or "instruction," and Webster also defines it as "training that corrects, molds, or perfects." DISCIPLes in training are made strong through the discipline of affliction, and the nutrition of God's Word to sustain them.

True peace lies in strength not gained while at rest. And good rest will surely follow a good workout and a healthy meal.

Father in heaven, You afflict in faithfulness and love. It is indeed good that I have been afflicted, and I thank You for it. Please let me not shrink at Your good discipline. Please feed me with Your Word, help me respond to Your instruction, and make me strong as Your disciple to better serve You whom I love.

  2. Were there really days when I had the strength to write such things? Yet even now, I know these words are truth. I thank you for bringing them back to me, Bud.
