Beloved

To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
~ Romans 1:7 (NKJV)

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God.
~ 1 John 3:1-2 (NKJV)

Even though he wrote the love chapter (1 Corinthians 13), I don't tend to think of Paul as a particularly affectionate sort. He wasn't even married, and an aging bachelor doesn't bring to my mind a picture of warm fuzzies.

But write the love chapter Paul did. And other than God Himself, no one else in Scripture uses the expression "beloved" more than Paul. How often does anyone use that particular term of endearment? It is reserved for only someone especially close to the heart. It was used of the Father for His Son Jesus.

Is there anyone in your life who calls you or is called by you "beloved"? Paul and John both use it in addressing you. More importantly, "beloved" describes God's affection for you, His beloved child. He does not use it of everyone, but only those He has adopted as His Own, who
call Him "Abba"—"Father."

Abba, Father, what manner of love, indeed, does for us all You have done? You give us life, liberty, and love above all love. If You did nothing else for us, we would be blessed only because we are Your beloved.

Ab, Abba / Father, Papa

For July, each post examines an Old Testament name of God.

Friday Freelance: FATHER

Our family has a fun little game. One of our five children randomly says, "Mom: I have a question."

I study the individual's face for a moment, then respond with, "The answer is yes / no / not now" or another answer which comes to me. The question is then posed, for me to either confirm or alter my answer. And because I love my children and wish to bless them, I'm eager to allow any request I don't have a good reason to deny.

Most fun is when my moment of studying a face is followed by correctly stating both the answer and the question. My oldest daughter swears I'm "freaky" in my uncanny ability to read their minds more often than not.

When she sees this post she'll finally learn my secrets. [Have you been curious, Michaelle?] While my previous experience as a street cop—reading a person's every move—certainly doesn't hurt, I rely far more upon 46 years life experience, mother's intuition, and intimate knowledge of my children.

We homeschool, so not only do I spend more hours observing them than I otherwise might, but they've also learned how to think primarily from me. Even more significant is the fact that our children grow up in their parents' images. They are both unique individuals and microcosms of the parents who co-create them.

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son,
born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those
who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son
into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
Galatians 4:4-6 (NKJV)

Like the child who is the "spitting image" of a parent, we are created in the image of our Father God.

The Creator did not produce man with merely His word and will as He did the rest of creation, but He formed man and woman with His hand and kissed life into them with His breath. We possess not merely mammalian faculties to think and show affection and express preferences, but Godlike capacities to reason and love and judge right and wrong.

Like a human father, Our Father in heaven sees how we think and anticipates our thoughts and actions. He understands and supplies needs we don't even realize we have. He tells us what will hurt us and instructs us to leave it alone. He knows our frailty and takes it into account even as He pushes us to excel. He watches us fail and gently picks us up, brushes us off, and urges us to try again. He finds us utterly irresistible and loves us with a limitless capacity.

He not only breathed life into us, but He gave the life of His Son for us, that He might breathe Himself into us.

And because He loves all His children—those whose faith in Jesus Christ qualifies them for adoption—He really does want all His kids to love one another and get along, valuing the differences with which He gifted us rather than despising them.

Our Father longs to bless us with every good and perfect gift, and He waits until the right time to present each gift even as we wait upon Him.

"All things have been delivered to Me by My Father,
and no one knows the Son except the Father.
Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son,
and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."
Matthew 11:27 (NKJV)

Good Gifts

"Thus says the LORD ... 'Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.' "
~ Jeremiah 33:2-3 (NKJV)

"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you... If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"
~ Luke 11:10,13 (NKJV)

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
~ James 1:17 (NKJV)

We all know what it is to open gifts and find something less than "perfect." However much we love the givers, we struggle to find places in our lives for what others thought would be good gifts.

The Lord knows with certainty what will make a perfect gift, and He longs to give us His best.

The best He has to give us is Himself. When a heart yielded to Him asks for good gifts, none exceed the gifts of the Holy Spirit. When we need an answer, the Word made flesh is able to speak to our hearts with Scripture. And if we wish to see "great and mighty things," the very best we can receive is a picture of God so clear that whatever else we may think we lack fades out of view.

Finding "good gifts" doesn't require entering just the right words on Google, but simply asking God to select what He knows is best. His choices are impeccable.

Father of Lights, Your goodness and love for us assure us of receiving from You so much more than we ever might have thought to ask for ourselves. You have amazing ways of answering prayers so much bigger than we can imagine. Please build our faith to trust You to send good gifts—indeed, Your best gifts. Surprise us!

Teach Us to Pray

Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray ..." So He said to them, "When you pray, say:
'Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.' "
~ Luke 11:1-2 (NKJV)

Jesus said to him, " 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' "
~ Matthew 22:37-39 (NKJV)

My plan for each day is to start it by talking with the Lord and reading His Word, in order to get His perspective on Him and me and life. I use the Lord's Prayer as a prayer outline—though the conversation rarely goes as I expect. As long as I make it through the first line, I get in what's most important.

Father
In the original Greek, the first word is "Father." God is always first. He gets the first of my time, treasure, talent—first place in the tabernacle of mySelf. The privilege to call God Father came by the blood of Jesus, without which I couldn't even enter His presence.

Of Ours
Though my Father's great love makes me feel like His favorite, I'm part of a family in which each child is favorite. My prayer ministry isn't just for me. My love of self must be my love of everybody else.

In Heaven
I acknowledge who is high and lifted up, and who is bowed to the ground. He is God. I am redeemed riff-raff. Without Him, I am nothing and can do nothing.

Hallowed be Your Name
To fear His name is to depart from iniquity. To love His name is to live surrendered to Him. To worship His name in spirit and truth is to worship Him as He is (not what I want Him to be), and as pleases His Spirit (my pleasure is the delight of worshiping Him).

Father of ours in heaven: hallowed be Your name!

I Will Not Let You Go

"For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,
And do not return there, But water the earth,
And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower
And bread to the eater,
So shall My word be that goes forth from
My mouth; It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."
Isaiah 55:10-11 (NKJV)

Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day... And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me!"
Genesis 32:24-26 (NKJV)

My four-year-old son Daniel loves to leap on his daddy and yell, "I got you!" The two wrestle as equals, until Daniel prevails victorious and Daddy succumbs in willing defeat.

Jacob wrestles with the Angel of YHWH (a manifestation of God Himself). Jacob prevails, holding onto the Lord and insisting, "I will not let You go." One cannot help but smile as God becomes a willing captive, and goes along with the charade as an opportunity to bless.

When a child of God reads His Word, the encounter can be approached like an adult's brisk handshake, or like a wrestling match in which we hold on and insist "I will not let You go unless You bless me." The Lord readily becomes a willing captive to the sincere heart, and pours out understanding through His Holy Spirit so that His Word may accomplish all He pleases.

Abba, our Papa, we too frequently come to You as busy grown-ups, with things to do, places to go, people to meet—often on only our computers. Please help us come to You as little children, eager to wrestle with You in prayer and in Your Word, persisting until we know we've been blessed.

What Have You Done?

The LORD of hosts has sworn, saying,
"Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass,
And as I have purposed, so it shall stand...
For the LORD of hosts has purposed,
And who will annul it?
His hand is stretched out,
And who will turn it back?"
Isaiah 14:24,27 (NKJV)

"All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing;
He does according to His will ...
No one can restrain His hand
Or say to Him, 'What have You done?' "
Daniel 4:35 (NKJV)

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
"Who is this who darkens counsel
By words without knowledge?
Now prepare yourself like a man;
I will question you, and you shall answer Me.
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? ...
Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?
He who rebukes God, let him answer it."
Job 38:1-4; 40:2 (NKJV)

Job was described as a man who "was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil." When his integrity was put to the test, Job faltered in this: Job contended with God, asking Him to give an accounting for why Job suffered.

God is ... God. He created everything. He owns everything. He defines the rules, determines the circumstances, dictates the final outcome. He owes no man an account of why He does what He does. Of all the questions we might ask Him, "What have You done?" isn't one.

Our Creator graciously allows us to know Him, to speak to Him, to seek His wisdom. He allows us to cry out to Him in anguish with our deepest hurts, fears, even anger. Such privilege should always remember that although our Abba may hold us close, the throne is His alone.

Almighty God, Most High King, Your judgments are unsearchable and Your ways are past finding out. The depth of the riches of Your wisdom and knowledge are beyond our appreciation. Please forgive us if we whine. Please increase our faith and help us trust in You.

Where is God?

"I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." (Matthew 11:25-27 NKJV)

My favorite study topics are Bible related—its culture, its history, its land. I love the insights I gain by understanding the Bible’s setting. Yet insights of education cannot be compared to the revelations of the Holy Spirit when I simply read the Bible itself as an earnest child, seeking and finding God because I search for Him with all my heart. Like an affectionate daddy playing hide-and-seek with a beloved child, my Abba in heaven wants to be sought, wants to be found.

Lord of heaven and earth, I truly love you as my precious Abba. Thank You for restoring my heart to that of a child if I puff up with knowledge. Please keep me mindful of my ignorance.

Throne Room Conduct

And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." (Matthew 8:2 NKJV)

The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed." (Matthew 8:8 NKJV)

As a child of the King, I have the privilege to come boldly before the throne for both grace (getting what I don’t deserve) and mercy (not getting what I do deserve). Yet once there, do I show proper homage to the Sovereign of the Universe and Eternity? Or has familiarity made me too casual? The beggar worshiped. The man of power showed fear for the presence of God. Both called upon Him as Lord—the Master to whom one’s own will is submitted.

Precious Abba, thank You that I have full access to Your throne through the name and blood of Your Son. Let me not fail to acknowledge Your majesty, to submit my will to Yours—to give You my love.

Inheritance

. . . you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." . . . we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Romans 8:15-18 NKJV)

The Almighty God, Judge and Creator of the earth, gives to those He has purchased the right to call Him not just "Father" (Hebrew Ab), but also Abba—"Papa." He wants a close relationship with me that I might know His fullest blessing, and that He might carry me through my deepest sorrow. I indeed share with Jesus an inheritance of both glory and suffering. Jesus will always have the greatest glory, for all glory I receive is to exalt Him. Whatever my inheritance of suffering, the suffering of Jesus is also greatest—the burden of my sin He bore to exalt me.
