Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. (Genesis 37:1 NKJV)
Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. (Philippians 3:18-20 NIV)
Dear friends, I urge you as aliens and exiles to keep on abstaining from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul.
(1 Peter 2:11 ISV)
The Israelites had sovereignty over their land for less than five hundred years (about 1051-587 BC). Even then, control was often compromised by nearby enemies who waged war against them, and maintained only as God gave them strength.
We likewise live as visitors—aliens, exiles, strangers, sojourners—on earth, where enemies of the soul surround us and war against the sovereignty of Jesus Christ in our lives. The only control we can hope to keep is in the strength of the Spirit.
Our Father in Heaven, Your kingdom come! Please keep us mindful of our true citizenship. Let Your kingdom of all that is good, holy and true reign in our lives. Let us see the world as You do.
