Getting Even

"I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven . . . For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?" (Matthew 5:44-46 NKJV)

Jesus says many "radical" things difficult to understand and accept. "Love your enemies" is as radical, impossible—and simple—as it gets. If I will pray for (not against) those who are spiteful and persecute me, ask God from my heart to bless them, and then bless them myself, will they remain enemies? How can I fail to come to love those who bother me most if prayer brings me to see them as God does? The power of God released by my obedient love transforms me, and maybe even them.

Oh my God, You have poured out upon me love and grace without measure and made me a new person. Please enable me to pour out love and grace to others.
