But when He saw the multitudes, [Jesus] was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary [harassed] and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." (Matthew 9:36-38 NKJV)
The Good Shepherd longs to see His sheep feeding in green pastures, refreshed with living water, restored in soul. Missionary work isn’t always traveling abroad or evangelism at home. Part of the work is the labor of prayer that sends, enables, and upholds the missionary. It might give a greater sense of fulfillment to be a laborer reaping the harvest. But the labor for fruit includes planting, reaping, and praying.
Lord of the Harvest, thank You for bringing me into the peace of Your sheepfold. Many of Your sheep are yet harassed by sin and scattered in the world. Please open their ears to hear Your voice, eyes to see You, hearts to welcome You.
