Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, "Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us." He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision. (Psalm 2:1-4 NKJV)
In my heart I know that God is sovereign over the heavens and the earth, that good defeats evil in the end. Yet as evil prevails in this world, it seems I must either grieve constantly for its victims or become unmindful of it. The latter seems necessary for sanity. But truly, the former is necessary for the fervency I need to fight evil on my knees. What manner of person ought I to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God?
Dear Lord, Your people long for Your face and for Your righteousness on the earth. If it is truly possible to hasten the day of Your coming, please put in our hearts what we need to do so.
